Fall: Victor → MelbourneSpring: Melbourne → Victor

Route first

I‑99 and US‑15 make the cleaner Pennsylvania line.

From Victor, the route uses I‑390 and I‑86 to Painted Post, I‑99 south to Williamsport, US‑15 south, US‑22/US‑322 east around Harrisburg to I‑81, I‑77 through Charlotte and Columbia, I‑26 to I‑95, then I‑95 to Melbourne.

Same road both ways

Fall and spring use the same corridor in opposite directions, making fuel, food, and weather decisions familiar.

Waypoints, not overnights

Painted Post, Harrisburg area, Winchester, Harrisonburg, Mount Airy area, Charlotte, Savannah area, and Brunswick area are navigation waypoints.

Four-hour maximum blocks

Plan a real 30-minute rest before any uninterrupted driving block reaches four hours.

Current designation: the former US‑15 freeway from the New York line to Williamsport became I‑99 on July 30, 2026. South of Williamsport, continue on US‑15, then use US‑22/322 east to I‑81 instead of entering downtown Harrisburg.

Fall · southbound

Victor to Melbourne in four route sections.

Section1≈108 mi
2 hr

Victor → Corning

I‑390 south · I‑86 east

Reach the Southern Tier near Avoca, then follow I‑86 into the Corning / Painted Post area.

Fall watch: wet leaves, deer, fog, early darkness, and the first lake-effect or upland snow.
Section2≈163 mi
3 hr

Corning → Harrisburg bypass / I‑81

I‑99 south to Williamsport · US‑15 south · US‑22/US‑322 east · I‑81 south

This inland Susquehanna corridor is the main alternative to Binghamton and Scranton. The US‑22/322 freeway connection reaches I‑81 north of downtown Harrisburg.

I‑99 ends at Williamsport. US‑15 continues south; near Duncannon follow the signed US‑22/322 route toward Harrisburg and I‑81 rather than staying on local streets.
Section3≈587 mi
9–10 hr

Harrisburg → Columbia

I‑81 south · I‑77 south

Follow the Shenandoah Valley through Winchester, Harrisonburg, Roanoke, and Wytheville, then cross Fancy Gap and Charlotte into Columbia.

Truck traffic, Shenandoah wind, Fancy Gap fog, and Charlotte congestion decide where this section should be split.
Section4≈481 mi
7½–8½ hr

Columbia → Melbourne

I‑26 east · I‑95 south

Join I‑95 near Bowman and continue through the Savannah, Jacksonville, St. Augustine, Daytona, and Space Coast regions.

Fall is still hurricane season. Evacuation orders, flooding, and tropical-weather closures overrule every saved route.

Spring · northbound

Reverse the familiar corridor.

Section4≈481 mi
7½–8½ hr

Melbourne → Columbia

I‑95 north · I‑26 west

Run north past Daytona, St. Augustine, Jacksonville, and Savannah, then turn inland toward Columbia.

Watch for spring thunderstorms, heavy rain, smoke, and coastal traffic.
Section3≈587 mi
9–10 hr

Columbia → Harrisburg

I‑77 north · I‑81 north

Climb through Fancy Gap, pass Wytheville and Roanoke, then continue north through the Shenandoah Valley.

A warm Carolina departure does not rule out cold rain, mountain fog, or late ice at elevation.
Section2≈163 mi
3 hr

Harrisburg bypass / I‑81 → Corning

US‑22/US‑322 west · US‑15 north · I‑99 north

Leave I‑81 on US‑22/322 west, join US‑15 north, then continue on I‑99 from Williamsport to the New York line and I‑86.

The route number changes twice—US‑22/322 to US‑15, then I‑99 at Williamsport—even though the corridor remains continuous.
Section1≈108 mi
2 hr

Corning → Victor

I‑86 west · I‑390 north

Retrace the Southern Tier and Genesee Valley into the Rochester area.

Check for lake-effect bands and overnight freezing before the final northern section.
