Seven days · Long summer light

Fire, ice, and room to breathe.

Before reservations

This route stays on normal roads and leaves the Highlands for another trip.

A standard rental car is suitable for this plan when conditions are good and the rental agreement permits the roads used. It does not include F-roads, river crossings, glacier driving, or unsupervised glacier travel.

Book the car early

Reserve an automatic transmission if needed, compare insurance and wind/gravel coverage, and confirm where the vehicle may legally travel.

Sleep along the route

Use Reykjavík, Hella or Hvolsvöllur, Vík, and Kirkjubæjarklaustur as practical bases. Summer lodging can disappear long before flights do.

Check conditions daily

Use SafeTravel, Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration traffic information, and the Icelandic Met Office—not yesterday’s forecast or a social post.

2027 reminder: Exact opening hours, parking systems, volcanic conditions, road restrictions, and tour schedules are not final this far ahead. The guide links to live official sources so you can verify everything before travel.

The itinerary

Seven days, four bases, and no midnight-sun marathon.

Day1

Arrive gently in Reykjavík

Collect the car at Keflavík, settle in, and use the long evening for a walk rather than a major drive.

  • Harpa and the Old Harbour
  • Sun Voyager waterfront
  • Hallgrímskirkja and central streets
  • A neighborhood geothermal pool if energy allows
Treat any Reykjanes or lagoon detour as conditional. Check official hazard and road information on the day.
Day2

Reykjavík at human speed

Keep one city day before the road trip so weather, jet lag, and delayed luggage do not control the week.

  • Hallgrímskirkja tower or Perlan for the overview
  • National Museum, Settlement Exhibition, or Reykjavík Art Museum
  • Old Harbour and Grandi
  • Evening swim at a public pool
Day3

Golden Circle to the southern lowlands

Leave Reykjavík early and finish near Hella or Hvolsvöllur instead of backtracking.

  • Þingvellir: Almannagjá and the historic assembly landscape
  • Geysir geothermal area and erupting Strokkur
  • Gullfoss
  • Reserved lunch at Friðheimar or a simpler roadside stop
Pay required parking or area fees using the current official method. Never step off marked paths in geothermal areas.
Day4

Waterfalls and black sand to Vík

This is the classic South Coast day, paced for walking rather than collecting pins.

  • Seljalandsfoss and nearby Gljúfrabúi
  • Skógafoss; climb the staircase only if conditions and knees agree
  • Dyrhólaey viewpoints when access is open
  • Reynisfjara, followed by an overnight in Vík
At Reynisfjara, obey the warning lights and remain far from the water. Sneaker waves can cross apparently dry beach without warning.
Day5

Glacier country and Jökulsárlón

Continue east through lava fields to Vatnajökull National Park, then return to sleep near Kirkjubæjarklaustur.

  • Skaftafell visitor area and a chosen marked walk
  • Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon
  • Diamond Beach from the safe public access
  • Optional reserved lagoon boat tour if it replaces—not adds to—a long hike
Pay vehicle area fees where required. Walk on a glacier only with a qualified guide and never approach unstable glacier margins.
Day6

Return west with the weather as editor

Drive back toward Reykjavík, using this day for one worthwhile stop skipped earlier.

  • Fjaðrárgljúfur if open and paths are in good condition
  • Kvernufoss or Skógar Museum
  • Geothermal dinner or pool stop around Hveragerði
  • Sleep in Reykjavík for an easier final day
This is the trip’s pressure-release valve. Do not fill it in advance; use it to absorb weather, fatigue, or a delayed Day 5.
Day7

Snæfellsnes—only if everyone wants one more road day

Make a focused peninsula loop, or keep Reykjavík and the nearby coast as the low-mileage alternative.

  • Búðir and the south-coast lava landscape
  • Arnarstapi coastal walk
  • Djúpalónssandur when sea conditions are safe
  • Kirkjufell viewpoint near Grundarfjörður
This is a long day trip. Skip it after difficult weather or driving fatigue; Reykjavík, pools, museums, and the waterfront are an excellent finale.

Every morning

Three checks before the engine starts.

SafeTravel

Review alerts, closures, eruption information, and destination-specific warnings. Share a travel plan for remote walks.

Road conditions

Check the official traffic map for closures and surface conditions. A road shown by a navigation app is not proof that it is open or suitable.

Weather and wind

Read the Icelandic Met Office text forecast. Wind can make doors, exposed walks, and driving unsafe even when the sky looks inviting.

Plan the practical side

Driving rules, reservations, packing, and meals.

The companion pages turn the route into a bookable trip without pretending 2027 schedules are already final.
