Choose a day, then tap a numbered pin. Spring closures and summer crowds call for different backups, all kept within the same route.

Choose your season

Spring rewards flexibility. Summer rewards an early start.

The route stays useful across both seasons, but the logistics reverse. Spring brings quiet roads and partial openings; summer brings fuller services, shuttles, reservations, and competition for parking.

Early spring

Expect ice, thawing ground, mud-season carriage-road closures, fewer open businesses, and limited road access. Build the trip around town and the open ocean section.

Late spring

Park roads, visitor services, restaurants, and transportation return in stages. Verify every 2027 opening and whether Cadillac reservations have begun.

Summer

Use Island Explorer where practical, reserve Cadillac in advance, reach popular trailheads early, and keep a second destination ready when parking is full.

Do not rely on last year's dates: 2027 operating dates, reservation periods, shuttle schedules, and project closures may differ. Check official live information before setting out.

The itinerary

Town first, granite coast second, quiet side third.

Day1

Bar Harbor on foot

Start with the village and waterfront. In spring, let weather set the pace; in summer, use the morning before town fills.

  • Village Green, Main Street, and the waterfront
  • Agamont Park and Frenchman Bay views
  • Shore Path, only where current access and surfaces are suitable
  • Bar Island land bridge only with a safe tide plan
The Bar Island route is submerged at high tide. Use an official tide prediction, note the safe crossing window, and leave enough time to return before the water covers the bar.
Day2

Acadia's ocean edge

Use the open ocean section in early spring or the full Park Loop Road and Island Explorer options during the main season.

  • Sand Beach and an out-and-back section of Ocean Path
  • Thunder Hole viewpoint and Otter Cliff
  • Jordan Pond shoreline when trail conditions are appropriate
  • Cadillac Mountain only with open access and any required reservation
Spring: carry traction and stay off closed carriage roads. Summer: take the shuttle where it fits, start early, and never stop outside designated parking. A park entrance pass is required year-round.
Day3

Somes Sound and the quieter side

Trade summit pressure for villages, coves, and short coastal walks on western Mount Desert Island.

  • Somesville and the head of Somes Sound
  • Southwest Harbor for coffee, harbor views, and lunch
  • Bass Harbor Head Light viewpoint
  • Wonderland or Ship Harbor; add Echo Lake in warm summer weather
Use signed paths at Bass Harbor Head Light and assess slippery footing. In summer, Echo Lake parking can fill; check shuttle routes or keep another west-side stop ready.

The seasonal swap list

Keep the weekend good when conditions change.

Spring closure

Respect thaw closures and avoid saturated trails. Use paved viewpoints, village walks, or the open ocean section of Park Loop Road instead.

Summer crowd

Leave a full lot behind. Use Island Explorer, move to a carriage-road walk, or switch to Somes Sound and the west side.

Rain, fog, or wind

Shorten exposed shoreline time. Choose Bar Harbor shops and galleries, a long lunch, the Abbe Museum when open, and scenic drives with safe pullouts.

Make it practical

Live checks, spring packing, and food by type.
